Additional Notes
While tourism has played a key role in Beaulieu's
development it is also known as an oasis of peace and quiet
with all the assets of a modern family-oriented town. As
the "jewel of the Riveria", there is a typical Provincial
farmer's market daily in one of the central squares, good
medical care, a conference and exposition center in a
turn-of the century architectural gem, an eleventh century
Roman chapel, palm tree lined beaches, two pleasure
boat ports, concerts, sports and many leisure activities.
There is excellent access by road or rail as well as by
air. France's third busiest and most modern airport is
fifteen kilometers to the West, in Nice. There is easy
access to Marseilles, the oldest of France's great cities,
where one can board the TGV (bullet train) and arrive in
Paris in a few hours.
Since 1966, Nice has
become an important University town with faculties in Law,
Science, Arts and Medicine. The Nice Opera offers a vibrant
season including ballet. There is an abundance of
orchestral and chamber music, with world class classical
and jazz soloists to be heard in the short distance from
Nice to Monte Carlo, where the American conductor James
DePriest is Director of the Philharmonic. There is also an
important school of Hotel and Restaurant Management in
Nice.
Museums of art, natural history, the rich marine life of
the Mediterranean, and archeology abound. In addition to
the Museum of Modern Art in Nice and the Fondation Maeght
at St. Paul, there are museums devoted to individual
luminaries such as Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso, and Leger to
name but a few. Studio glass and ceramic workshops are in
the nearby towns of Biot and Valauris.
The area is dotted with ancient "perched villages", olive
groves and vineyards. Flower growing is an important
industry supplying the needs of France and the world's
perfume industry. Lemons and other fruits, vegetables and
herbs flourish during two growing seasons. All of Province
is a repository of Gallo-Roman ruins of the most historic
and educational interest. At the same time, just above Nice
is France's "Silicon Valley", Sophia Antipolis, a growing
industrial research park and major University Center.
